The Laurel Highland GMRS Group was formed in the summer of 2001. Barry Shaffer - WQAN278 and Carl Maust - WQCG761 were the founding members. It started out with a Uniden ARH 251 25 watt repeater with a self-contained celwave duplexer. (462.600) The antenna was a spare UHF antenna that was not in use. It was placed in service at the Somerset County Amateur Radio Clubs tower site. It was fun at first but we quickly found that the repeater wasn't getting out like we would like it to. Barry and Carl bought another Uniden repeater and was put in service (462.575) close to Seven Springs Mountain Resort at 2800'thanks to The Allegheny Highlands Repeater Association. The Antenna was on top of the tower around 2900'. This repeater would get out about a 50-60 mile radius. In the summer of 2007, LHGMRS had Repeater-Builder build a converted GE Master 2 to replace the Uniden at Seven Springs. The repeater worked well, but the controler was getting into the preamp, so it was taken off the aire for repairs, and the Somerset repeater (600) was placed at Seven Springs. It's now Spring 2008 and the GE will be put back on the air soon and the Uniden will be moved to a new location on the Seven Springs property.
